The AI Tsunami: Why AI Disruption Has Already Broken Your Clock

It has been a tsunami brain-week for me, and I want to share what has been churning in my head. Most of the people I meet have not caught up with the reality of AI disruption, and that includes seasoned CEOs and Founders. They talk about it, they use it, and some even teach it. Yet very few have grasped what it is actually doing to the one thing every plan depends on: TIME.

You Prepare for Winter. Why Not for AI?

Think about how you prepare for the seasons. You bring out the woollens before winter, and you keep an umbrella handy before the monsoon arrives. Nobody debates whether winter is real or argues that the rain is exaggerated. We simply read the signal and prepare. So there is little reason why you wouldn’t prepare for AI in exactly the same way. The difference is that the seasons return on a known calendar. AI arrives on a calendar nobody has printed yet. That is precisely why preparation matters more, not less.

Stop Arguing About the Wrong Things

Before we get to what matters, let me clear away what doesn’t. Too many capable people are spending their energy on the noise. In my experience, most conversations about AI get stuck in three places. Each one wastes the little time we have.

  • Stop dwelling on silly fears such as job loss. The fear is understandable, but it is the wrong question. The World Economic Forum projects 170 million new roles and 92 million displaced ones by 2030, a net gain of 78 million. The same report, however, expects nearly 40% of the skills required on the job to change. In other words, the real threat is not that your job disappears. It is that your skills expire while you are still worrying.
  • Stop chasing courses that promise six figures from using Agentic AI. A certificate earned this quarter may describe tools that have moved on by the next one. Learning matters enormously; however, learning a product is not the same as understanding a shift.
  • Stop arguing about what AI can or cannot do. Research group METR found that the length of tasks frontier AI agents can complete alone has doubled roughly every seven months. So whatever you are certain AI cannot do today is, at best, a claim with a short shelf life.

Stop, stop and stop. Each of these debates keeps you busy while the clock quietly changes speed. So take a breath and look at the question that actually matters !!!

What AI Actually Is (and Why Most of Us Miss It)

What you really need to understand is what AI actually is. Most of us don’t know, including many who use AI every day as a tool of sorts. We see AI as two letters, two words, a technology or a branch of science. Some of us see it as a new phenomenon affecting work, life and society. All of these views hold some truth, yet all of them miss the deeper point. AI is not simply a new thing that happens within time. Instead, it changes the speed at which everything else happens, and therefore it changes Time itself as we experience it.

Do You Remember When You Learnt Time?

Cast your mind back to when you first learnt Time. Sixty seconds make a minute, sixty minutes make an hour, and twelve months make a year. All our lives, we have calibrated our actions and decisions against that understanding. It takes X years to become an adolescent, Y years to raise a family and Z years to reach retirement. Every notion we hold about life sits on a scale of how long something takes to mature. And we plan accordingly. Business works the same way. We build three-year plans, five-year strategies and ten-year careers. Experience taught us how long a product, a market or a person takes to grow. That paradigm is dead !!

How AI Disruption Compresses the Clock

AI disrupts that concept of Time totally. It destroys the entire method of planning with Time the way we have done it for so long. The year will still have twelve months. Within those months, however, events will churn hundreds and thousands of times faster than most of us have imagined.

The evidence is already public. ChatGPT reached an estimated 100 million monthly users just two months after launch, according to a UBS study citing Similarweb data. By comparison, TikTok took about nine months and Instagram two and a half years to reach the same mark. Stanford’s 2025 AI Index then tracked the cost of running a model at GPT-3.5’s level. It fell from $20 to $0.07 per million tokens in roughly 18 months. That is a reduction of more than 280-fold. Meanwhile, the scope of work AI can handle alone keeps doubling while most annual plans are still awaiting approval.

Some of you reading this already know it. You recognise that none of this is the exaggeration the general mass believes it to be. I am happy for you. But I am seriously warning everyone else who still spends Time in the classical way. They are thinking rubbish, doing rubbish and piling up rubbish in their lives, all while wearing AI blinkers.

What AI Disruption Means for Your Business

For CEOs and Business Leaders, the implication is concrete. You built your planning cycle for a world where competitors, costs and capabilities moved at a readable pace. That world is fading fast. In McKinsey’s 2026 State of AI survey, nearly nine in ten respondents report regular use of AI in at least one business function. Yet only 44% say AI is scaling across their enterprise, and only about 6% qualify as high performers with significant EBIT impact. Clearly, using AI and being reshaped by it are two very different things. In our experience, the gap usually sits in three places.

  • The planning calendar. An annual plan locked in April may be obsolete by September. So a rolling, quarterly re-diagnosis is no longer a luxury; it is basic hygiene.
  • The talent assumption. Degrees and years of service once served as proxies for capability. When skills turn over this quickly, the ability to relearn matters more than what someone learnt once.
  • The decision speed. If a competitor can test, learn and adjust within weeks, a decision that takes a quarter becomes a strategic Constraint in itself.

The year is still twelve months long, but what fits inside those twelve months is not. The Full Potential of your business now depends less on how much time you have and more on how quickly you convert Time into learning.

Wake Up: It Is Already Tomorrow

There is still Time, but not the kind of Time we grew up with. So wake up to this new reality by understanding and appreciating its DNA. Our textbooks, religious books, degrees, certificates, connections and money will not help us in the sense we understand them today. They still carry value; however, that value is being redefined, and quickly. The people who thrive will not treat AI as a tool to master. Instead, they will see it as a change in the rhythm of life and retune themselves to it.

Wake up! It is already tomorrow. The people who depend on your decisions, from your team to your family and your customers, are living in it with you.
